About us
Blue and white enamel house number plates are one of the features that give city streets, particularly in France, their special charm. As many travellers have discovered, these are seldom found in hardware stores.
Since 1995, Franco-file has been working with enamelling workshops to make these distinctive plaques more widely available.
Vitreous enamelling on steel is a superior technique. Its components are pigment and molten glass which explains its translucent sheen. This form of enamelling is fired at 750°C, and every stage of the production is labour intensive.
Each steel plaque goes through the kiln three times, to fire on the undercoat, the coloured enamel then the numerals, letters and border.
FIXING ADVICE
The style of screws we suggest for fixing all our plaques are black japanned round head screws which are suitable for wood or masonry.
Take care not to screw the plate too tightly to the wall or door as this could fracture the enamel.
